Why your Word page count doesn't match your book (and why it matters)

Updated October 28, 2026 · Amazon KDP · IngramSpark · Barnes & Noble Press · Lulu

Your cover's spine is built from your page count. Use the wrong count and the cover won't fit.

The error: “Cover spine does not match interior page count”

Cover spine does not match interior page count

Paraphrased. This shows up when the cover was sized from a page count that changed later.

Quick fix: SparkPrep scans your cover and interior against the exact platform rules, pinpoints the issue, and fixes it for you with one click.

Why you get “Cover spine does not match interior page count”

Word counts pages at whatever size you're typing on, often letter size. When the book is set to 6" x 9", the same words fill more pages. Changing fonts, margins or adding front matter changes the count again. And printers count every page, including blank ones, title pages and the copyright page.

Some printers also need the total to be an even number, or pad the book with blank pages at the end. The only count that matters is the page count of your final interior PDF.

How to fix “Cover spine does not match interior page count” manually (the hard way)

If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Export your finished interior as a PDF at your exact trim size.
  2. Read the page count in the PDF, not in Word. That number, including blank pages, is what the printer counts.
  3. Enter that same page count in your book setup and get the new spine width from your printer's cover calculator.
  4. Open your cover file, change the spine to the new width, move the spine art to fit, and re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001.
  5. Re-upload the interior and cover together and wait for the file review again.

Step by step in your app

Get the real count

  1. Finish your interior first: trim size, margins, fonts, front and back matter.
  2. Export the final PDF and read the page count in your PDF viewer.
  3. Use that number for the cover and spine.

If the count changed after the cover was made

  1. Get a new cover template or size for the new count.
  2. Resize the spine and move the front panel to match.

Quick answers

Which page count do I use for my book cover?

The page count of your final, formatted interior PDF, including blank pages, front matter and back matter. Not the count from Word.

Why did my page count go up?

Book pages are smaller than letter size, so the same text fills more of them. Fonts, margins and added front matter change the count too.
