How to fix "interior content extends outside the safety area"
Updated October 31, 2026 · IngramSpark
This is one of IngramSpark's most common interior rejections, and it usually has one simple cause.
The error: “Interior content extends outside the safety area”
BOOKBLOCK: INTERIOR CONTENT EXTENDS OUTSIDE THE SAFETY AREA. All text, borders, and important elements need to be at least 0.5 inch (13 mm) from trim edges. INTERIOR CONTENT IS NOT CENTERED. Submit a new interior PDF with the content properly centered at the correct size.
Quoted from a real IngramSpark rejection.
Other ways people search for this error
- “Interior content is not centered”
- “Content outside the safe area”
- “Text too close to the trim edge (interior)”
Quick fix: SparkPrep scans your cover and interior against the exact platform rules, pinpoints the issue, and fixes it for you with one click.
Why you get “Interior content extends outside the safety area”
IngramSpark wants everything on your pages, including page numbers and headers, at least 0.5" (13 mm) from every trim edge.
The usual cause: the PDF was made at letter size (8.5" x 11") while the book is 6" x 9". IngramSpark shrinks or crops it to fit, so the text ends up off-center and too close to the edge. The second cause is margins under 0.5", often from page numbers sitting low in the footer.
How to fix “Interior content extends outside the safety area” manually (the hard way)
If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Open your manuscript in Word (or InDesign).
- Go to Layout → Size and set the page to your exact trim size (for example 6" x 9"), not letter size.
- Set every margin to at least 0.5", and check headers, footers and page numbers sit inside that 0.5" too.
- Re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001 with fonts embedded, and check the PDF page size matches your trim size.
- Re-upload it to IngramSpark and wait for the file review and new e-proof.
Step by step in your app
Microsoft Word
- Layout → Size → More Paper Sizes: set the width and height to your exact trim size (for example 6" x 9").
- Layout → Margins → Custom Margins: at least 0.5" on every side (more on the inside for thick books).
- Move page numbers up so they sit at least 0.5" from the bottom edge.
- File → Save As → PDF.
Check it in Acrobat
- File → Properties: the page size must match your trim size exactly.
- Zoom into a page: no text, number or line should be closer than 0.5" to any edge.

Quick answers
What is IngramSpark's safety margin?
All text, borders and important elements must be at least 0.5 inch (13 mm) from the trim edges, including page numbers and headers.
Why does IngramSpark say my content is not centered?
Usually the PDF page size doesn't match the book's trim size, such as a letter-size PDF for a 6 by 9 inch book.
