Word Count to Page Count Calculator
Find out about how many pages your book will be in print, and what that means for your spine. Type your word count and pick a book size.
Why your page count matters before you design
Your page count sets your spine width, and your spine width sets your cover size. It also changes your printing cost and your inside margin. Word's page count is not your book's page count: a Word page is 8.5" x 11", and a book page is much smaller. This estimate helps you plan. Your final number comes from your formatted PDF.
How many pages is my book? Quick guide
Rough page counts for a 6" x 9" book at 11 pt, with normal margins and chapter breaks:
| Word count | About this many pages | Common for |
|---|---|---|
| 40,000 | 140 to 160 | Novella, short nonfiction |
| 60,000 | 200 to 220 | Short novel, self-help |
| 80,000 | 260 to 290 | Most adult novels |
| 100,000 | 320 to 350 | Long novel, fantasy |
| 120,000 | 380 to 420 | Epic fantasy, sci-fi |
These are estimates. Fonts, line spacing, chapter openings, pictures and scene breaks all change the real count.
Why Word's page count is wrong for your book
Word usually shows 8.5" x 11" pages with 1" margins. A 6" x 9" book page holds about half as many words, so a 150-page Word file can become a 280-page book. Always size your cover from the page count of your finished, formatted PDF. More on this in our guide: Word page count vs PDF page count.

How many pages is 80,000 words?
About 260 to 290 pages in a 6 by 9 inch book at 11 point type with normal margins. A smaller book size or bigger font gives more pages.
How many words fit on a book page?
Roughly 250 words on a 5 by 8 inch page and about 330 on a 6 by 9 inch page at 11 point type. It changes with font, spacing and margins.
Should I use this number for my cover?
No. Use it to plan. Size your cover from the page count of your final formatted PDF, because the spine width depends on it.
