White vs cream paper: how your paper choice changes your spine
Updated November 1, 2026 · Amazon KDP · IngramSpark
Switching from white to cream paper feels like a small choice. It changes your cover size.
1. The error: “Spine width does not match the page count and paper selected”
Spine width does not match the page count and paper selected
Paraphrased. This is what you get when a cover built for white paper is uploaded for a cream-paper book.
2. Why the printer rejected it
Every page adds thickness, and cream paper is thicker than white. So the same 300-page book has a different spine on each paper:
| KDP paper | Spine per page | 300 pages |
|---|---|---|
| White | 0.002252" | 0.676" |
| Cream | 0.0025" | 0.750" |
| Premium color | 0.002347" | 0.704" |
IngramSpark measures paper in pages per inch: about 512 for white 50#, 444 for creme 50#, 400 for groundwood and 377 for 70# color. Each printer's own numbers only work for that printer.
3. The do-it-yourself fix
Before you design
- Pick your paper first, then get the cover size.
- Use the spine width calculator or the printer's own template for that paper.
If you already switched paper
- Get a new template for the new paper and page count.
- Widen the cover by the difference, move the front panel over, and re-center the spine text.
You can fix this by hand with the steps above. Or drop your file into SparkPrep and let it find the problem and fix it for you, in minutes. Try it on your file.
What it costs to get this fixed
| Hire a professional cover designer and interior formatter | SparkPrep | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | About $930 for the cover plus about $800 for the inside pages: around $1,730 | One price per book for the cover, the inside pages, or both |
| Time | Book a freelancer, wait for their schedule, then go back and forth on changes | Upload and get your fixed, print-ready files in minutes |
| Printer check | Depends on the freelancer | Checked against your printer's own rules, every time |
Freelancer prices are Reedsy's own published figures (source). A great designer is worth it for original artwork. If you just need your files right for the printer, you don't need to pay designer prices.

Refit my coverQuick answers
Is cream paper thicker than white?
Yes. On KDP a cream page adds 0.0025 inch to the spine and a white page adds 0.002252 inch, so cream books have wider spines.
Can I use KDP's spine width for IngramSpark?
No. Each printer's paper is different, so always use that printer's own numbers or template.
