Should you hire a freelancer to format your book? Cost, speed and risk compared

Updated October 28, 2026 · For first-time self-publishers

Most first-time authors assume they have to hire someone. Here's an honest look at what that involves, and when you don't need to.

What hiring a freelancer looks like

  1. Find someone. Prices on Fiverr and Upwork range from very cheap to professional rates. Reedsy's vetted professionals charge a median of about $930 for a cover and about $800 on average for interior formatting (Reedsy's figures).
  2. Wait. You're on their schedule, often several days per round.
  3. Revise. Each change is another message and another wait. Many packages limit the number of revisions.
  4. Upload and hope. If KDP or IngramSpark rejects the file for bleed, margins or ink, you go back to the freelancer, or fix it yourself.
  5. Change anything later (a typo, a new page count, a new price on the back) and you pay or wait again.

The risk nobody mentions

A good-looking file isn't the same as a file the printer accepts. Cheap gigs don't always check bleed, spine width, the 240% ink limit or font embedding. You only find out when the rejection email arrives.
