How to fix "incorrect spine width" and spine text that's too wide
Updated October 31, 2026 · Amazon KDP · IngramSpark
Your spine is the one part of the cover that changes every time your page count changes. That's why it gets so many books rejected.
The error: “Incorrect spine width. Reduce spine text to fit”
JACKET LAYOUT NOT BUILT TO SPEC. INCORRECT SPINE WIDTH — SPINE SHOULD BE 0.313" FOR 78 PAGES. REDUCE SPINE TEXT TO FIT.
Quoted from a real IngramSpark rejection.

Quick fix: SparkPrep scans your cover and interior against the exact platform rules, pinpoints the issue, and fixes it for you with one click.
Why you get “Incorrect spine width. Reduce spine text to fit”
Spine width = page count x the thickness of one page. Add or remove pages, or switch from white to cream paper (cream is thicker), and the spine changes. A cover built for the old page count no longer fits.
Spine text has its own rule: it must sit inside the spine with room on both sides, because the fold can move a little. On KDP, keep spine text at least 0.0625" from each fold, and KDP only prints spine text on books with more than 79 pages. IngramSpark doesn't allow spine text on paperbacks under 48 pages.
How to fix “Incorrect spine width. Reduce spine text to fit” manually (the hard way)
If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Open your original cover file.
- Get the exact spine width from your printer's own cover calculator, using your final page count and paper (cream paper is thicker than white).
- Change the document width to 0.125" + back cover + spine + front cover + 0.125", and move the spine art and text so they sit centered on the new spine.
- Make the spine text smaller so it has empty space on both sides of each fold, then re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001.
- Re-upload it to your printer and wait for the file review again. If it fails, you start over.
Step by step in your app
Get the right spine width
- Use the page count from your final interior PDF, not from Word.
- Enter it in the spine width calculator, or download a fresh template from your printer for that page count.
Resize your cover
- Change the document width to the new full cover width.
- Move the front cover panel so it starts right after the new spine.
- Center your spine text in the new spine and shrink the font until it has clear space on both sides.
Check before uploading
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and measure the spine with the measuring tool (Tools → Measure).
- Make sure no spine letters touch the fold lines.

Quick answers
Why did my spine width change?
Your page count or paper type changed. Every page adds thickness, and cream paper is thicker than white, so the spine has to be recalculated for your final interior.
How many pages do I need for spine text?
KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages. IngramSpark needs at least 48 pages on paperbacks.
