This one sounds technical, but the cause is usually simple: black that's made from all four inks instead of black ink alone.

Why you get “Ink coverage exceeds 240%”

Printers use four inks: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). Total ink is all four added together in one spot. A pure black uses 100% (black only). A "rich black" can use 300% or more.

IngramSpark's limit is 240%. Over that, ink soaks the paper, smears and dries slowly, so the file is rejected. It often comes from black text in a file saved as RGB, or dark photos converted to CMYK without an ink limit.

How to fix “Ink coverage exceeds 240%” manually (the hard way)

If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Open your original file.
  2. Change all black text and black lines to 100% black only (C0 M0 Y0 K100), not "rich black".
  3. For color pictures, convert them in Photoshop (Edit → Convert to Profile → Custom CMYK) with the total ink limit set to 240%.
  4. Re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001, then check in Acrobat Pro (Print Production → Output Preview → Total Area Coverage at 240%) that nothing is highlighted.
  5. Re-upload it to IngramSpark and wait for the file review and new e-proof.

Step by step in your app

Find the problem (Acrobat Pro)

  1. Tools → Print Production → Output Preview.
  2. Tick Total Area Coverage and set it to 240%. Areas over the limit get highlighted.

Black and white interior

  1. Export it as grayscale (black ink only). Grayscale can never go over 100%, so the error disappears.
  2. In Acrobat: Print Production → Convert Colors, convert everything to a grayscale profile.

Color cover or interior

  1. Make black text 100% black (C0 M0 Y0 K100), not rich black.
  2. Convert images to CMYK with a profile that limits total ink, such as US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 (300% max), then lower further if needed.
  3. In InDesign, export with the PDF/X-1a preset and check Output Preview again.
