How to fix cover text that's too close to the edge
Updated October 28, 2026 · Amazon KDP · IngramSpark · Barnes & Noble Press · Lulu
If your title runs right up to the edge, the printer's blade can clip it. Here's how much room to leave.
The error: “Text is too close to the trim edge and may be cut off”
Text is too close to the trim edge and may be cut off
Paraphrased. KDP's cover previewer flags this; IngramSpark mentions it in rejection notes.
Quick fix: SparkPrep scans your cover and interior against the exact platform rules, pinpoints the issue, and fixes it for you with one click.
Why you get “Text is too close to the trim edge and may be cut off”
Covers are printed bigger and then trimmed. The cut can move a tiny bit, so anything right at the edge is at risk. Amazon KDP asks you to keep text at least 0.125" inside the trim line. SparkPrep recommends 0.25" or more so nothing important ever gets close.
Spine text needs room too: it shouldn't touch the folds between the spine and the covers.
How to fix “Text is too close to the trim edge and may be cut off” manually (the hard way)
If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Open your original cover file and turn on the trim and bleed guides.
- Find any text, logo or face closer than 0.25" to the trim line (0.125" is the bare minimum at KDP).
- Move or shrink it so it sits comfortably inside. On the spine, leave space on both sides of the text.
- Re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001 with the bleed included.
- Re-upload it to your printer and wait for the file review again. If it fails, you start over.
You can fix this by hand with the steps above. Or drop your file into SparkPrep and let it find the problem and fix it for you, in minutes. Try it on your file.

Quick answers
How far from the edge should text be on a book cover?
Amazon KDP's minimum is 0.125" inside the trim line. Leaving 0.25" or more is safer.
Can background art go to the edge?
Yes. Background art should go past the edge into the bleed. Only text and important details need to stay inside.
