Barcode placement on a book cover: KDP and IngramSpark rules
Updated October 28, 2026 · Amazon KDP · IngramSpark
The barcode area is easy to get wrong: art or text sitting where the barcode goes, or a barcode that doesn't match the book's ISBN.
The error: “Text or images found in the barcode area / ISBN on cover does not match”
Text or images found in the barcode area / ISBN on cover does not match
Paraphrased. Each printer words this differently.
Quick fix: SparkPrep scans your cover and interior against the exact platform rules, pinpoints the issue, and fixes it for you with one click.
Why you get “Text or images found in the barcode area / ISBN on cover does not match”
Printers and stores scan the barcode on the back cover, so it needs a clean, empty spot. KDP puts its own barcode in a 2" wide x 1.2" tall area in the lower right of the back cover if you don't add one. IngramSpark asks you to leave an area 1.75" wide x 1" tall free of text and graphics for it.
If your blurb, author photo or art runs into that area, the barcode can't be read and the cover is rejected. And if you use your own barcode, its ISBN has to match the ISBN you entered for the book, or it's rejected for an ISBN mismatch.
How to fix “Text or images found in the barcode area / ISBN on cover does not match” manually (the hard way)
If you want to try adjusting the files yourself, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Open your original cover file and go to the back cover.
- Find the barcode box: KDP uses 2" wide x 1.2" tall in the lower right; IngramSpark asks for 1.75" wide x 1" tall.
- Move any text, logos or pictures out of that box so only plain background is left there.
- Check the ISBN printed on the cover is the same ISBN you entered for this exact edition, then re-export as PDF/X-1a:2001.
- Re-upload it to your printer and wait for the file review again. If it fails, you start over.
Step by step in your app
Leave the space
- On the back cover, keep the lower right corner clear: 2" x 1.2" for KDP, at least 1.75" x 1" for IngramSpark.
- Keep a plain, light background behind the barcode so it scans.
If you add your own barcode
- Make sure the ISBN under the barcode matches the ISBN in your book's setup, digit for digit.
- Use a new ISBN for each format: paperback, hardcover and ebook each need their own.
IngramSpark template
- IngramSpark's cover template already shows where the barcode goes. Design around it and delete the template guide layer before exporting.

Quick answers
Does KDP add the barcode for me?
Yes. If you don't include one, KDP places a barcode in a 2 inch by 1.2 inch area in the lower right of the back cover, so leave that space empty.
Can I use the same ISBN for paperback and hardcover?
No. Each print format needs its own ISBN, and the barcode on each cover must match that format's ISBN.
